Volunteers will become celebrities this weekend at the Rose Bowl.
CelebrateLA 2008, which is free and open to the public, is being held Sunday to recognize and show appreciation for Los Angeles County residents who give their time to nonprofit organizations, organizers said.
"We should honor people and we should make them celebrities," said Jim Leahy, executive director of the Volunteer Center of Los Angeles.
CelebrateLA 2008 will feature live music, speakers, booths and lots of awards. But organizers also hope it also will bring awareness about the need for volunteers, and that it shows that Los Angeles County is a helpful place.
"It's really supposed to be fun. We're not using it to raise money. We're trying to raise awareness," Leahy said.
The first of what organizers hope will become an annual happening will feature performances by Mara, We Are Lions, Small Mercies, Arguello Cafe, Linda Lopez, Ahui, Nydia Rojas and Cristian Castro.
There will also be games, arts and crafts and giveaways. Parking is $5 and refreshments will be available for purchase.
The highlight, however, will be the guests of honor - more than 18,000 people will receive Presidential Volunteer Awards.
In turn, the event seeks to get others involved in their communities. There will be nearly 100 booths representing various organizations offering opportunities for people to volunteer and get involved, organizers said.
"Your time, your choice," Leahy said.
And he isn't just pushing an idea. Leahy helps out a number of organizations, including the United Way and the Girl Scouts.
"We should walk the talk - and the spirituality," Leahy said.
